INTERSTATE-84,
HARTFORD

This work is an investigation of the clear influences that a form the size of the highway can have on the surrounding landscape and the way in which we perceive it.

Extending across parts of the United States, interstate-84 is split into two sections. The first spans from Oregon to Utah and the second from Pennsylvania to Massachusetts. Within Connecticut, the influence of the highway is most apparent in and around the city of Hartford. The relationship between the highway’s intrinsic form despite its obvious functional design in contrast to the surrounding area was of interest to me. As users and viewers of the highway, our feelings towards it are generally cold or non-existent. Thoughts of the highway are generally that it is a means to an end, nothing but a convenient way to get from point A to B.

I am intrigued by the way in which an architectural marvel can be normalized and overlooked through constant exposure.
